TEMPEST—i.e., transient electromagnetic pulse emanation standard—filters are designed to eliminate the conduction of electromagnetic interference in electrical and electronic equipment. In doing so, they protect sensitive data—such as banking data, client information, or intellectual property—from being intercepted by unauthorized parties.

The United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) classify TEMPEST filters into the following classification based on protection requirements:

  • NATO SDIP-27 Level A& USA NSTISSAM Level I: for devices where attackers are assumed to have direct access (<1-meter distance)
